John (87) passed peacefully on October 2nd, leaving to join his dearly departed wife and sweetheart, Phyllis (nee Grynkewicz) (just in time for Sunday morning liturgy); parents John & Mary; sister Margaret; and infant son John Edward.
John leaves behind his sister Mary Ann (Joseph); brother-In-law “Buck”- John Cassidy (Margaret); his five sons: John (Laura), David (Lauren), Matthew (Amy), Daniel (Elizabeth), Mark (Jennifer); his nine loving grandchildren: Chloe; Christopher, Natalia, & Kyra; Mairead & Colin; Owen, Marina & Elise.
Born in Pittsburgh in 1935, John grew up in Rankin, where Phyllis always said she had her eye on him since kindergarten! John played basketball and competed for the WPIAL championship for the “JackRabbits”.
Post high school, John received his credentials in electrical engineering through the Carnegie Institute and Westinghouse. He married Phyllis in 1959, was drafted and served in the US Army just prior to the start of Vietnam War. They moved to Cleveland in 1962 and John worked for American Gas Association Laboratories where he inspected and assisted in the production of Natural Gas Appliances before fulfilling a long, successful, and respected career as an independent on-site engineering consultant.
Meanwhile, he and Phyllis were blessed to enjoy each other with friends and family, whether golfing, bowling, or playing cards. And in raising their five sons, they encouraged: music (all five played professionally); swimming; and playing/enjoying team sports. John was constantly demonstrating his home improvement and car maintenance skills and educating us in the maintenance of the yard and garden.
Throughout all of this, he provided love, inspiration, and support as the Pack 17 Cub Master for 9 years; president of church council for many years, and of course, being Dad for 60+ years, raising sons to be loving, good husbands, fathers, and friends and to inspire this cohesive love and faith in their children and beyond.
