Eleanor Banas Obituary

Eleanor was born on August 17, 1925 and passed away peacefully on September 1, 2026 at the age of 101. Beloved wife of Joseph (deceased).

She was known by all who knew her as a deeply kind and caring person, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of love and devotion to her family, faith and community.

A proud graduate of West Tech High School, Eleanor attended Ohio University before stepping up during World War II as part of the “Rosie the Riveter” generation. While her beloved fiancé, Joe, was fighting overseas in the Philippines, she wired military aircraft at the local bomber plant (known then as the Tank Plant, now the I-X Center), doing her vital part for the nation’s war effort.

Her love story with Joe began years earlier when they met at age 16 while roller skating at the Rollercade. They were married when she turned 22, embarking on a lifelong partnership filled with shared dreams, travel, and devotion. Together, they raised five children—Patty, Sally, Jane, Chris, and Mark—ensuring they were well-educated, supported, and guided through life’s lessons.

Eleanor’s professional career reflected her dedication and sharp mind. She worked in the banking industry for many years, rising to become executive secretary to a Vice President at National City Bank. Later, she served with distinction as Assistant to the Mayor of Seven Hills, taking on increasing responsibilities throughout the Mayor’s term. Alongside Joe, she co-chaired the Seven Hills Home Days celebration for many years, bringing joy to her neighbors and town. An artistic soul, Eleanor was a gifted potter who crafted delicate, elegant figurines and sculptures for display in her home and as cherished gifts for her children. Her vibrant creativity also shone bright in the neighborhood Graydon Drive Club, where she was a driving force behind holiday parties, seasonal dances, and memorable parade floats.

A woman of deep and enduring Catholic faith, she was a longtime devout parishioner at St. Columbkille, active in the Ladies Guild, Holy Name Society, Mission Circle, and as a Girl Scout leader, while also organizing group bus trips departing from the parish. In her latter years, she warmly shared her faith attending St. Albert the Great alongside her daughter Jane. She also cherished adventures with “The Lakewood Bunch”—a tight-knit group of lifelong friends with whom she and Joe traveled extensively during their retirement years. Above all, Eleanor lived her life in service to those she loved. A truly kind and caring person to all who were blessed to know her, her strength, warmth, and artistic spirit will be forever remembered and missed.
