David Matt

Passed away peacefully on August 8, 2022. Dearly beloved husband of Kathryn Matt (nee Koscak); loving father of Jessa Coniglio (Joe), Lexi Matt, and Logan Matt; dear grandfather of Joseph, Anna, and Matthew; dear brother of Debby Matt, Nancy Haag, and Susan Kramer.

David Matt was a gentle man who was loved by his family and community. He was loyal and supportive and known by many titles: a wood craftsman, a handyman, ball cap wearer, extraordinary gardener, composter, and prankster. David had the best sense of dry humor and you could always count on him to lighten the mood with a joke, no matter the occasion. To his grandchildren, he was known as “Papa Fixer and Fort Builder.” David loved to fish and nap, and he loved rhubarb pie. Because he was a handyman/fixer, he shopped in every Home Depot and Habitat Restore in every city he visited.

At summer sporting events in Cuyahoga Heights and Brooklyn Heights, David set the bar very high as he was “The Grill Master” of the concession stand. He, along with his wife, Kathryn, purchased the food, cooked the food, and served the food. David was a member of the Chagrin Valley Jaycees and was named “Volunteer of the Year” for his outstanding job in organizing Blossom Time and the Christmas lighting events. David also volunteered at St. Martin of Tours Church where he was the Head Chef for their Annual Pasta Dinner and creator and designer of the flourishing community garden.

David graduated from Channel High School in 1968 and later graduated from The Ohio State University in 1973 with a degree in Landscape Architecture. He had a number of careers: landscape architect, builder, and educator (Shaw High School and Valley Forge High School). In retirement, David worked for the city of Valley View.

David is clearly a man who was loved by his family, friends, and his communities; indeed, he will be missed and will forever be remembered.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, August 13, 2022 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 14600 Turney Road, Cleveland, OH 44137 at 10 a.m. Family will receive friends at the church from 9-10 a.m.

A Reception will be held following the Mass at Valley View Woods. Private Interment at a later date.
